Major AI platforms including Google, OpenAI and Anthropic are facing growing challenges linked to the manipulation of AI-generated responses, according to a BBC investigation.
The report found that AI systems which retrieve information directly from the internet can sometimes be influenced by strategically created webpages, blog posts, or social media content containing misleading information.
Unlike traditional search engines that provide users with multiple links to compare, AI chatbots often generate a single summarised answer. Experts cited in the report warned that this makes it easier for manipulated or poorly verified content to shape public-facing AI responses.
The investigation found that simple online posts were able to influence some AI systems into repeating false or exaggerated claims after the content was indexed online.

It also highlighted concerns that similar tactics are already being used in more sensitive areas such as medical advice, financial planning, product recommendations, and online reputation management.
