Meta asks some AI employees to return to management roles after cutting middle managers
Meta is asking some individual contributors in its Applied AI division to consider moving back into management, according to Business Insider. The shift comes months after the company moved thousands of employees into the AI unit and sharply reduced management layers as it sought leaner teams and greater efficiency.

Meta appears to be reconsidering part of its push towards a manager-light workforce, with some employees in its artificial intelligence division being offered the chance to return to management positions.
Four people familiar with the matter told Business Insider that individual contributors in Meta’s Applied AI (AAI) organisation have been approached about moving back into management as part of a recent internal reshuffle. The programme is voluntary, according to the report.
The development is notable because Meta has spent much of the past year reducing layers of management and reorganising teams around a flatter structure. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has repeatedly backed smaller, startup-style teams, particularly as AI tools take on more tasks that previously required larger groups.

The latest change suggests the company’s rapidly expanding AI operations may require a different organisational structure from the one Meta has been promoting elsewhere.
