Sam Altman has said artificial intelligence is unlikely to cause the large-scale employment collapse many had feared, marking a notable shift from some of his earlier warnings about AI-driven disruption in white-collar jobs.
Speaking virtually at a conference hosted by Commonwealth Bank of Australia in Sydney on Tuesday, the OpenAI chief executive said the technology has not yet eliminated as many entry-level office jobs as he initially expected.
Altman acknowledged that while OpenAI had been largely accurate in predicting the pace of AI development since the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, the company misjudged the social and economic consequences.
“I’m delighted to be wrong about this,” Altman said during the discussion with CBA CEO Matt Comyn, referring to earlier fears that AI could rapidly displace white-collar workers.

According to Altman, one of the biggest lessons has been understanding how important human interaction remains in professional environments. He explained that even though AI systems can automate communication and routine tasks, people still value direct engagement with other humans.
