OpenAI is reportedly preparing GPT-Bidi-1, a new bidirectional voice model for ChatGPT. This model could make conversations feel more natural and drive greater AI adoption through voice interactions.

OpenAI appears to be preparing a major upgrade to ChatGPT's conversational capabilities. The reported changes are part of the company's broader plans to transform ChatGPT into a "super-app," with improvements planned across its entire AI product lineup. While much of this overhaul focuses on Codex (OpenAI's coding tool) and AI tools with agency—capable of performing tasks on behalf of users—reports indicate the company is also working on a new bidirectional audio model called GPT-Bidi-1.

"Bidi" is reportedly short for "bidirectional," a design that allows the assistant to speak and listen simultaneously. TestingCatalog first spotted references to GPT-Bidi-1 last week; internal code described it as a "huge leap in intelligence" and "the next generation of voice."

The model is said to make conversations feel more natural. For instance, it can respond with brief acknowledgements—such as "okay" or "right"—when the user pauses or slows down, without disrupting the flow of the conversation.

A more natural conversational experience

GPT-Bidi-1 is also said to handle interruptions more smoothly. If a user asks it to count from one to ten and then interrupts halfway through to reverse the count, the assistant can adapt immediately.

Perhaps the most significant change is its ability to maintain the thread of a long conversation. Instead of losing the initial context, GPT-Bidi-1 remembers earlier parts of the discussion and continues to respond accordingly. Reports also suggest that it no longer interrupts the conversation during long pauses—a behaviour that has
