A former AI researcher at OpenAI and Anthropic has resigned, issuing a stark warning that leading technology firms are irresponsibly racing towards superintelligence, potentially gambling with humanity's future.

Key Points

AI researcher Jacob Coxon resigned from Anthropic, criticising leading tech firms like OpenAI for an irresponsible race towards superintelligence.

Coxon alleges that companies are "gambling with our lives" by pursuing advanced AI without sufficient safeguards.

He warns that rapidly advancing AI systems could become superhuman, capable of hacking and acquiring real power, posing unprecedented dangers.

Coxon highlights that while executives publicly downplay risks, many privately fear catastrophic harm from uncontrolled AI.

He advocates for pacing agreements between major US labs to prevent security incidents and ensure responsible AI development.

Jacob Coxon, an AI researcher at Anthropic, announced his resignation on Wednesday, alleging that leading technology firms, including OpenAI, are acting irresponsibly in an unchecked race toward developing superintelligence and "gambling with our lives". Coxon, who spent the past three years conducting pre-training research across both OpenAI and Anthropic, said that the competitive rush between labs is being pursued without adequate safeguards.

Concerns Over Unchecked AI Development

In a post on social media platform X, he warned that the technology is advancing rapidly toward superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionise any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources. He added that no other human activity poses a comparable level of danger.
