OpenAI is adding an invisible watermark to texts generated with ChatGPT in the EU. But it’s not quite bulletproof yet.
OpenAI’s text watermarking technology is called textGrain, which adds an invisible statistical signal to ChatGPT’s word choices.
According to the AI company, textGrain exceeds Google’s SynthID for text and works well in many cases. However, the tool is less effective in 2 situations: when a text is short and when it has been edited.
OpenAI’s detector identified watermarks in about 80% of 200-token passages, compared with about 95% of 400-token passages. Detection rates are significantly lower for content such as mathematics or cooking recipes, where there’s less flexibility in word choice.
