OpenAI bans China-linked ChatGPT accounts over attempts to influence US AI and tech policy debates

OpenAI has removed two clusters of ChatGPT accounts that it said were linked to covert influence efforts aimed at shaping discussions around artificial intelligence, technology policy and tariffs in the United States.
In a blog post, the company said the accounts were likely operating from China and used its AI models to create content designed to influence ongoing public debates. OpenAI said the activity included social media posts, comments and images shared through networks of accounts that appeared to pose as Americans from different backgrounds.
One of the operations, which OpenAI named "Data Center Bandwagon", focused on claims that the rapid expansion of AI data centres was driving up electricity costs for households. According to the company, the accounts generated English-language comments and comic-style images linking rising power prices to growing electricity demand from AI infrastructure.
OpenAI said the campaign drew on reporting from legitimate news organisations and used that material to build narratives suggesting that the costs associated with data centre growth were ultimately being passed on to consumers. The content was then distributed through what the company described as likely inauthentic accounts on X.
